KuduCraft — Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
What is KuduCraft?
KuduCraft converts any image into embroidery files for sewing machines (PES, DST) or printable hand embroidery patterns (PDF). Upload a photo, logo, or drawing — get a stitch-ready file in seconds.
Do I need to create an account?
Your first hand embroidery pattern is free with no signup required. For additional patterns or machine embroidery files, you'll need a free account.
What images can I upload?
We accept PNG, JPEG, BMP, WebP, GIF, and TIFF formats. Maximum file size is 10MB. For best results, use a clear, high-contrast image.
What if my image format isn't supported?
You'll see a friendly message suggesting you save your image as PNG or JPEG. Most phones and computers can do this easily.
Machine Embroidery
What file formats do you generate?
PES (for Brother, Babylock, Bernina) and DST (universal format for all machines). Both are generated automatically.
Will it work on my machine?
If your machine reads PES or DST files, yes. This includes most Brother, Babylock, Bernina, Tajima, and many other brands. Our files use PES version 1, which is compatible with virtually every PES-capable machine ever made.
What about newer machines?
PES version 1 is backwards compatible with all machines — old and new. Your machine will read our files perfectly.
How do I transfer the file to my machine?
Copy the PES or DST file to a FAT32-formatted USB stick. Place the file in the root directory (not in a folder). Insert the USB into your machine and select the design.
What are those lines in the preview?
If you see thin lines connecting different parts of the design, those are "jump stitches." Your machine will automatically trim these — they won't appear on the finished embroidery.
What thread do I need?
Each design tells you exactly which thread colors are needed. Thread colors are shown in the preview and listed in the design details.
Why does the design look different on different fabric colors?
KuduCraft is smart about fabric colors. On a black shirt, it only stitches the non-black parts. On a white shirt, it only stitches the non-white parts. This saves thread and time. You choose your fabric color before processing.
Hand Embroidery
What's included in the PDF pattern?
Every pattern is a 7-page PDF guide:
1. Design overview with difficulty rating
2. Thread shopping list (DMC and Anchor codes)
3. Color grid pattern
4. Black & white symbol grid (for grayscale printing)
5. Iron-on transfer template
6. Stitch suggestions for each area
7. Complete beginner's guide
What fabric do I need?
We recommend 14-count Aida fabric for cross-stitch. The pattern guide includes fabric size recommendations.
What thread brands are supported?
Each pattern includes both DMC and Anchor thread codes, which are the two most widely available brands worldwide.
Can I print the pattern in black and white?
Yes! Page 4 of every pattern is specifically designed for black and white printing, using distinct symbols instead of colors.
What languages are available?
Currently English, Afrikaans, and German. More languages coming based on demand.
Pricing
Is there a free option?
Yes! You get up to 5 free hand embroidery PDF patterns per month. No credit card required.
How much does the Starter plan cost?
$10/month for unlimited everything — machine files AND hand embroidery patterns. Annual plans available at a discount.
Can I buy a single design without subscribing?
Yes. One-off machine embroidery files are $5-8 each. One-off hand embroidery PDFs are $3-4 each.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel through your account settings. You keep access until the end of your paid period.
Do you offer refunds?
We offer a preview of every design before you download it. Since you can see exactly what you're getting, we don't offer refunds for "I don't like how it looks." If a technical error prevents delivery, we'll fix it or refund you.
Troubleshooting
My machine won't read the file
- Make sure the USB is formatted as FAT32 (not NTFS or exFAT)
- Place the PES file in the root of the USB, not inside a folder
- Try the DST file instead — it's more universally compatible
- Check your machine's maximum stitch count and design size limits
The colors look wrong
- Thread colors are suggestions based on the closest match. You can substitute similar colors.
- Monitor colors and printed colors may look different from actual thread.
- Always check the thread list, not just the preview image.
The design is too large/small for my hoop
- Use the size setting when processing. Standard sizes: 100x100mm (4x4"), 130x180mm (5x7"), or check your machine's hoop size.
Small text is hard to read in the pattern
- Increase the grid size for better text resolution. Grid 60+ recommended for designs with text.
- Very small text (under 3mm) may not convert well — consider removing it from the image first.
